Project CAMEO aims to explore the experiences and needs of both mothers awaiting court and young people who have / are experiencing a parent who has gone through, or is going through, the criminal justice system.
I am looking to chat with:
women (18+) with criminal justice histories, who were mothers when awaiting court and receiving a sentence.
Young people (16-25) who have experienced / are experiencing their parent(s) going through the criminal justice system
Coming soon: inviting young people between the ages of 13-15 who have experienced / are experiencing their parent(s) going through the criminal justice system.
If you want to share your experiences, thoughts on what support might look like for families before a sentencing decision is made, and views on children having a voice in the court processes of their parent(s) - I would love to talk with you.
Feel free to browse the website for more information on the project or you can apply below.

Hi, I’m Mel, a PhD student at Keele University. When this project was advertised, I was genuinely excited to apply. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on working with people whose voices are often left out of the conversation, people who may have felt misunderstood, unseen, or discriminated against, and supporting them as they make sense of and work through complex experiences.
What matters most to me as a researcher is understanding people’s real-life experiences and making sure that any solutions come from those who have actually lived them. I believe that people with lived experience should be at the centre of shaping systems that affect their lives. That’s why your voice really matters to this project.
Outside of work, I’m a mum, a wife, and an artist (I paint people’s pets!). I’m also a big fan of sci-fi and horror, and I’ve somehow managed to keep most of my houseplants alive.
If you’re thinking about taking part, thank you. I know that talking about personal or painful memories can be difficult. Please know this is a safe, kind, and non-judgmental space. You’re always free to share only what feels right for you, in your own time and in your own way. Your story really matters, and your voice can help shape meaningful change.
PROJECT CAMEO is proud to be a safe space for all backgrounds and identities
